A new record – over 50 attendees – was established at last night’s MoMo Brisbane event at the Exchange Hotel.

Guests were treated to three engaging speakers, from mobile developers who took the “Just Do It” theme to heart by talking about real-world, deployed mobile projects.

First speaker was Stephen Kelly, from SJK Consulting, who spoke about their Jobs to Crews (J2C) product, which has been deployed by a major water management authority to help manage the Queensland water grid. Stephen spoke about the benefits of using the mobile handset to locate, diagnose, and help fix issues with the grid in real-time, across a distributed labour force.

Next was Sherwin Huang, Interaction Designer from Locatrix. Sherwin spoke about the recent Sushi Plane campaign from Telstra, and how they used the Inspired location-content engine and Layar to create an Augmented Reality game. There were also amusing stories about the Japanese-style challenges the contestants endured in Tokyo last week. Keep an eye out for footage on Telstra’s Sushi Plane website shortly.

Finally, Ben Novakovic from We Are Hunted spoke about a personal project, Tweete.net. A lightweight Twitter client, Ben spoke about the challenges (and solutions) to building and supporting a site that provides over 3 million page views per day, primarily from South Asia.

The MoMoBNE team ran a mobile survey the morning after the event, and we will post the results from than shortly, but thanks are due to our speakers as well as The Exchange Hotel, which again proved what a difference a terrific venue makes.

Next month’s event details were also announced: see you on September 20th (RSVP Details coming soon!)

The revitalized Mobile Monday event in Brisbane this week was an unqualified success, with around 40 attendees joining Oliver Palmer, Chris Kettle and Phil Larsen to discuss iPhones, the application store, and the future of mobile at our new venue, The Exchange Hotel.

Phil Larsen told the story of Halfbrick’s Fruit Ninja game, and what it took from a promotions effort to get to one million paid downloads on the AppStore. Besides of course an engaging, “sticky” game experience, it also takes a lot of hard work with reviewers and plain tactical sense to get your application noticed, rated, reviewed and (most importantly) bought in the launch period. My247’s Chris Kettle spoke about their effort to launch and promote MyMovies as a paid application, while TigerSpike’s Oliver Palmer provided some real insights into emerging trends around the world of mobile and mobile applications.

We also welcomed Peter Leutjens from AIMIA, our drink sponsors for the evening, and i.Lab’s Peter Allison, who spoke about their forthcoming Angel Investor event. We’d heartily recommend that you attend this event to get a chance to pitch your next mobile idea at some qualified local investors.

But the real star of the show was our new venue, The Exchange Hotel’s Corner Bar – our follow-up survey (mobile of course) confirmed the new room a resounding success, with the drinks, discussion and networking extending far into the evening.

Mark your calendars for the next Mobile Monday Brisbane, on Monday August 16th, and stay tuned to the e-mail list for forthcoming speaker, sponsor and other event announcements.

MobileMonday Brisbane continues to gain momentum! A good-sized audience gathered at i.lab’s Toowong offices to network, have a few drinks, and check out a series of showcase presentations from some of Brisbane’s mobile innovators. The showcase format – 8 slides, 4 minutes – allowed a great mix of products, technologies and mobile media to be shared in an interactive environment.

Sam Collins from Locatrix

The first speaker was Barefoot Software’s Mike Hillsdon, who presented Barefoot’s on-device portal publishing solutions. Mike drew on Barefoot’s experience with major brands, showing interactive mobile catalogs and shopping carts they have created for companies such as Country Road & Mercedes Benz.

Next up was Sam Collins from Locatrix Communications. Sam presented Salamander, a Locatrix-developed Mobile Device Attribute Detection system. Salamander lets mobile developers access mobile handset attributes (screen size & resolution, browser type, supported J2ME etc) in real-time via a web service, allowing revision-controlled updates from the public WURFL data file. It also allows for application- or network-specific extension attributes, which helps your application and content to be optimized for each target handset.

Chris Kettle from My247

MobileMonday Brisbane co-founder Chris Kettle then presented My247’s forthcoming mobile and web projects, including a social network publishing and QRcode links for every venue to send mobile handset users click directly onto a venue’s mobile site. This approach helps both in usability – you can invite your friends to a specific venue to meet – and also in driving traffic to a venue’s mobile site for special offers, forthcoming event details etc.

Finally, SMS Fun’s Creative Director Matt Ascough presented their free SMS mobile portal community. SMS Fun lets users send free SMS to their friends, recharge their pre-paid mobile accounts and much more.

Chris Kettle closed the formal part of the event by announcing a must-attend event: AIMIA Queensland is holding a “great debate” entitled Can your mobile phone save the planet? The event will be held at QPAC in Southbank from 4:30pm on Monday 18th May, the debate will be followed by networking drinks and then Mobile Monday’s May meeting. We’ll post more details here and at the various social networks in the next week – it promises to be a very entertaining evening.

A big thanks to our speakers and everyone who attended – it was agreed that the mobile community in Brisbane is certainly gaining momentum. Thanks too to i.lab for again providing the venue, and Locatrix Communications for sponsoring the evening’s refreshments. See you next month for another Mobile Monday!

Thunderstorms across south-east Queensland on Monday night failed to dampen the enthusiasm for Mobile Monday!

Last night’s MoMoBNE meeting was well attended, despite some members arriving rain-soaked due to a Brisbane thunderstorm. The meeting was held at i.lab in Toowong, in Brisbane’s inner west, and featured a couple of informal presentations, a well-thumbed Android G1, and lots of friendly exchanges over beer and snacks.

Peter Allison kicked off proceedings with a brief presentation about the i.lab Incubator, our hosts for the evening. i.lab provides it’s clients with professional, smart-office space and support services, helping companies raise capital, access grants and grow their businesses. In it’s 9th year, i.lab has helped over 95 companies access more than $75 million dollars in capital and grant programs, creating nearly 500 jobs in the process, and is a clear success story for the Queensland Government.

Locatrix Communications CEO Mark White then gave an overview of the recent GSMA Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, from a look at the venue to some of the major announcements (and stolen mobiles!) featured during the congress.

Finally Dale Rankine from Moket showcased a group of Adobe-related announcements from the MWC, including the Flash Lite 3.1 Distributable Player, the Adobe Mobile Packager, and two programs designed to help mobile developers gain access to funding and distribution for their content: the Flash Lite Developer Challenge, and the Open Screen Fund (run by Adobe and Nokia).

While attendance was less than planned – we expect the rain caused havoc with some transport plans – the meeting was enjoyable and informative. Thanks again to Peter Allison and i.lab for supporting MoMo Brisbane!

The next MoMoBNE event will be held on Monday, April 20th – stay tuned for details.
